I don't think Shinpachi has to be bland. I think his humor can come out of being the straight-man. Since everyone around him is totally nuts, just pointing out how they're being crazy is good. Like... "THAT DOESN'T EVEN MAKE ANY SENSE" or "THAT'S NOT EVEN PHYSICALLY POSSIBLE!!" if you catch my drift? orz anon is terrible at explaining today.

I don't think anyone would consider playing a character he thinks is bland. It'd be pretty boring, heh. I just like making fun of him too. Maybe it'd be better if I tried playing a sadist.

PFFT, I'll just be honest here. I asked for advice because I love CFUD's Gintama cast. I hope you guys'll get more cast members. Thanks for your insight!

Actually the anon two comments down brought up some interesting stuff.

If you're planning on playing a more serious Shinpachi, he does have some sort of idealized idea of samurai in general. Well, I imagine hanging around with Gintoki it's kind of getting less black and white good/evil kind of thing for him. But Shinpachi (and Gin) both have that very traditional hero-y mindset of protecting anyone in need and "don't make girls cry, you bastard!" (Kyuubei Arc is where this shines the most imo) Frankly the entire yorozuya are all completely stubborn in their ideals, and hell and high water they won't change (...unless it's a crack episode XD)

THIS IS JUST MY BLABBERING since I rewatched the Yoshiwara Arc and stuff, so this is probably way more serious than you probably need. IDK DEPENDS ON THE RP ENVIRONMENT. Whitescreening this for spoilers. Personally I think Shinpachi is actually capable of killing someone in order to protect his friends more so than Kagura (short of her going completely batshit crazy). I'm basing this off when he ( ... )

Everything is in the glasses. If Shinpachi ever loses his glasses, for any reason, he's dead. Just drop him.

That'd be kind of a fun application sample. "How did I get dropped before sending in an application?! That doesn't make any sense!" Man, that feels really off for some reason.

If he's talking to someone who isn't from Gintama, he's going to come off as slightly bland and normal. He reacts to situations, he doesn't make them. So, if you want to use his screaming straight man side, throw him into the crazy situations. However, when shit gets serious he's going to fight for his friends!!
Canonmates just make him crazier. Shinpachi acts different around Gintoki then he does around Kondo, just make sure you pick up on the little things.
Oh and keep his love for Otsuu in your playing!! It could let him come up with some funny situations to take him out of the straight man position and make him more of the ridiculous, funny character.

Noted! I will take this into consideration as I catalog his many reactions. A straight man's job is never done in an insane world.
