SRS SURVEY

There was a secret like this or something a while back and I concur.
Anons: what is a crack/gag character?
That is, at what point, in your mind, is a character unsalvageable from relative flatness or too ridiculous to play for more than lulz? Does it depend on the player's level of awesome?
Including comic relief characters from otherwise serious canons. I fear my perception of this issue has been forever skewed by my growing up on cartoons. Maybe I'm in the wrong game, because others seem to share my views on this issue moar.

I think that the biggest deciding factor in a character's dimensionality is what their motivations are, so to speak. If you can't ascribe a reasonable motivation/thought process for their canon actions, you're not going to be able to do it in RP.
Of course, sometimes there's nothing wrong with a one-dimensional character used for lulz. I can think of a couple of examples, but rare fandoms are kind of rare, so.

That makes perfect sense. :D
I tend to gravitate toward at-least-somewhat-comedic characters and end up waffling between "This could work! ...but it won't... BUT IT COULD ...but what if no one else thinks so?... BUT I COULD MAKE IT WORK ...but I suck".
But considering half of all RP wank ever is about buttsex and characters who have too much buttsex and characters who would never have buttsex, worrying about who will object if I want to give my goofy minor characters some layers seems kind of ridiculous.

Fffff, I gravitate to at-least-somewhat-comedic canons, anon. I feel for you, dude. Just make sure you keep the comedy present even as you add those delicious, delicious layers, and I think you'll be fine. :)
Personally, I love it when people flesh out more minor characters. But I love doing it myself, so I'm biased.

But of course. :Db
Oh yes. It's always a pleasant surprise to see fandoms represented by folks other than the usual suspects. Especially with small fandoms -- when those ones do get characters it's usually the same ones over and overrr.

I've been majorly hiatusing recently, but trying to find someplace to plunk the Disney muses that keep infesting me l-lol.
Sadly, the game I'm in is a strange anomaly that has a vast minority of non-live-action characters (even anime is few and far between, wtf) and I could be imagining it, but they seem kind of divided. The anime characters seem to be mostly tagged by other anime characters for example.
Fuck it, de-anoning nowsycophanticdickDecember 20 2008, 03:29:34 UTC
dsfjkl;a rock on, anon buddy. If you're ever interested in some new games to try, feel free to check out memento_eden and/or netherworld_rpg. The former already has a fucking amazing Kuzco and the latter'll open with a Maleficent in its roster who will probably fail horribly because holy shit is that a hard voice to keep up and more at either would be awesome. I'd give more of a sales pitch, but then you would witness some real teal deer, let me tell you.

The mun of atamawaempty does it so right. She's playing a character from a completely crack fandom (that very few people know, sadly), and balances her with the serious characters perfectly.
