Do Gen X and The Millennials really exist?

I was at an SME annual meeting early this week and there was a presentation on engaging new volunteers to help the organization. One presumed salient point mentioned was that "Gen X" has only 38M people, while "The Millenials" have 79M. This got me thinking: What IS a generational split? As someone born in 1965, I had the distinction of watching how things closed up behind my class. Classrooms had to get smaller and in many cases schools after my year closed down quickly. Lots of private schools had to close as well due to decreased demand. But some of us while growing up felt we were the lost-out-on-sex generation. Things up until the 80s got wilder and better for anybody who wants to experiment sexually, then came the HIV/AIDS problem quashing it. On the heels of it comes the upswing of conservatives....and we can see what that's caused.
