Title: Earth
Fic-For-All Pairing: Chao-Ahn, Mina Harker (LXG)
Author’s Notes: The element Earth is associated with the change of seasons and adulthood.
Summary:…but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

Perhaps, had she not been such a strange child, her parents would not have been so quick to give her over to the strange Englishwoman. There was also the matter of four dowries and five daughters to care for *. Frankly, Chao-Ahn was surprised they’d taken a week to consider it.

Of course, Mrs. Harker had sought her out, come looking for the quiet, cursed girl the villagers said could speak with the spirits.

One week and she was off to Beijing with this strange woman.

One month, and Chao-Ahn was happier than she ever thought she’d be.

Mrs. Harker - Mina - believed her and believed in her.

Her new mentor was also a vampire - but it seemed such a little thing to overlook.

Never before had Chao-Ahn experienced such freedom - she could read her fill, was allowed to train in fighting and weapons, and finally allowed to do something useful with her curse.

The leaves began falling and Chao-Ahn could hardly believe a year had passed.

This was her destiny - to send the spirits to their rest, cleanse spaces and face the things that went bump in the night.

Eleven years old and she’d found her way home - at last.

END.

* To those I just lost - even in Modern Chinese culture, it is commonly expected that the youngest daughter will never marry or pursue a career, instead staying home to care for her parents in their final years.
