Watching the Dark Mark glitter ominously in the night sky, he remembered Mrs. Cabe, an elderly woman who had visited the orphanage each week.
She always brought a big bag of sweets, bribing the children with toffees and crèmes to sit still as she read from a large book, bound in black leather.
He had usually snatched a fistful of candy and retreated to his room, far from her somnolent tones and hopeful entreaties to “accept God’s love”.
But tonight, seeing the mark in at all its glory, he remembered a particular phrase she’d once read.
Signs and wonders indeed.
