There's a story, one of the original Darwin stories. I don't think it was ever confirmed as true, but it's a damned fine story nonetheless

Humm
I wrote up my thoughts on this matter in relation to you and her.. and I found it full of Bad Royal… Bad Miss X and here's what you should do… Then I realized it doesn’t matter in the slightest.
People do what the hell they want and damn be the world if anybody is going to tell them otherwise. Be it good or bad advice, its worthless because we already "know" and whatever your saying doesn’t apply. I've done it to my friends, you've done it to yours. I'm of the impression its all part of a recycling pile of shit that is human behavior.
Question: Friend asks you to drive him somewhere. He'd drive himself, but he went out drinking last night, and wrapped his car around a tree. 2 months later, same question. Same scenario. Do you drive him?
As for the shit pile thing, what is the alternative? No hope? Giving up? Or is it the efforts that *we* make that make life worth living?
Eh. Fuck it, maybe I'm just babbling. It's been known to happen.

Excellent analogy; all it requires is a gentle massage to make it a near-perfect reflection of the situation at hand.
Friend goes out, drives drunk, wraps car around tree. Friend calls you for help, and it turns out that he's not seriously injured in any life-threatening way, just shaken and suffering fairly light physical damage. You assist friend, and caution him not to drive drunk again, you yourself being fairly shaken after hearing that friend was in a DUI and still calming down from your initial shock.
Two months later, friend approaches his vehicle, clearly sloshed and equally clearly intending on driving again. You remind friend that this wasn't a good idea the first time, and isn't any better an idea now. Friend tells you that it's all under control, that this time he won't wreck the car, and if "you can't accept that it's his life and his decision" you can basically go fuck yourself. Zero regard for what it's going to do to you when he wraps his car around another tree, because that's not important; what is

Sorry, got tied up on that drunk-driving thing and totally ignored the second question. Stupid 4300 character limit.
In any event: No hope and giving up are both fine alternatives. The world is an easier place to handle when you surrender any pretense that anything is fair, or just, or that things work themselves out. The world is what it is, and it's somewhat liberating to finally internalize that.
I don't know what makes life worth living. If anyone ever finds out, shoot me an email. You all know the address.
