shameful news media

Mar 16, 2011 05:47

I've largely given up cable news over the past few years and relied more on reading news online. Now I remember why. Once reporters get on the scene, they do everything they can to make themselves part of the story. I don't care about how Anderson Cooper or Shepherd Smith feel about the devastation in Japan. I care about how the people in Japan are ( Read more... )

Filler, between attempts to steal your money? tackdriver56 March 16 2011, 14:58:49 UTC
One of our PBS stations was relaying NHK (Japanese network) this morning. The Japanese reporter was interviewing a New Zealand journalist who was in Japan comparing the damage in Japan to what Christchurch experienced last month. NHK coverage has been decent, talking about a doctor who lost his practice and his home, and is working non-stop to help survivors (lots of old people with diabetes and high blood pressure, who lost all their meds to the tsunami).

On another station, I did see a reporter using his phone to leave a message for a US relative of a survivor, which I thought was decent of him. I can't imagine being able to take a phone back from a survivor, once you loaned it to them to make a call. But photo op at both ends? Is that just despicable theater, or what? If it's not a reenactment, it means they made people wait to talk to each other, until the crews could get there. Ick.

I've been watching a lot of NHK during all this. I'm so glad I get that channel. Een when their coverage/info has been mediocre, I feel like it helps me get a better overall view of things when combined with cable news and articles online.

I know! Despicable theater is exactly what it was.

I turned on the TV this AM, and discovered that CPTV4U was NOT rebroadcasting NHK, as they were yesterday.

As much as I like to rag on Charter for moving channels around and sticking me with infomercials when I'm paying for content, this one's Connecticut Public Television's fault.

Come on Roxy ...

Everyone knows about the Liberal mind set when it comes to stuff like this.

"Never waste a good tragedy."

You know they'll use their media idealogs to press the general population into fear about nuclear engergy.

It's just the way their poltical opportunistic minds work.

Example: The Shooting of Congress woman Giffort.

They turned it into a right wing talk radio bashing.

They'll turn this into a fear mongering over Atom energy.

"Never waste a good tragedy."

I don't think that one can be pinned on liberals. It's news media across the board that does it. If it bleeds, it leads has been the status quo in TV news for a long time. The latest trend seems to be this: first hype the audience with fear, then calm the audience with experts and facts.

They'll turn this into a fear mongering over Atom energy.

I really hope not. Even Obama wants more nuke plants, so I think (for the most part), the political division between for and against nuclear energy has gone away. it was be tragic if the crisis at a an outdated plant in Japan set us back to the fears of the 30 years ago.

holy crap yes

also:
"So for the viewer at home(whoapparentlyhasneverbeentoschoolorreadabookever) HOW DOES A TSUNAMI FORM AND WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN EARTHQUAKE AND A TSUNAMI" cut to token Japanese actor because they are Japanese and an...actor explaining the difference. IDEK what they are thinking sometimes.

For every 80 Americans who actually graduate high school, there are 20 who did NOT.

For every American with an IQ above 100, there is one below.

A frakking Japanese *Governor* actually went on record saying that the earthquake and tsunami and power plant problems were divine retribution for societal greed.

You know what's really scary?

Their votes are weighted the same as yours and mine.

I saw only one Australian news story about this which coved the long queues people are in for basic supplies, while covering a line at a pharmacy they found an Australian of Japanese decent and loaned her phone so she could tell her parents she was ok which they filmed but only at her end.

They also had the decency to give out any supplies they happened to bring with them before they left.

Nuclear Power Plants anonymous March 17 2011, 09:29:22 UTC
are bad. They will meltdown, it is inevitable. Where do you think they dump all those barrels of toxic waste?

Everything should be solar and wind powered. It can be done, its just that rednecks want oil and nuclear reactors so they can have lots of jobs to support their brethren. They never think of the consequences to the future health and lives of humanity.

Nuclear Reactors don't feel pain. They can't be bargained with, they can't be reasoned with. And they absolutely will not stop until you are dead.
