b) I don't think Rose was amazing as an episode, but for an introduction to the series, I didn't mind it. It introduced the characters and the concept and was quite good about it, the fact that it isn't glamourised and built up the way American television shows are isn't really a weak point to me. You said that Life on Mars and Jonathan Creek gain merit on sheer earnestness, well. Okay, maybe, but Life on Mars and Jonathan Creek are good television shows, I agree, and not because they pack a "wow" factor and try to one-up themselves every other episode, they're good shows because THEY DON'T DO THAT.
I like shows, shows are good to me, because they're written well, or I enjoy them because they don't need to have a "wow" factor, they just need to be.
I don't think Rose was a particularly amazing episode out of RTD's arsenal, but cramming in a bunch of "omg look at that!" and other such condescending ruses to make it "better" wouldn't have... made it better. The TARDIS is amazing. I don't need to be

That was precisely my point, although maybe I didn't express it very well. These shows don't try and do better and better every time or go overboard. They're good because they don't try too hard.

That's not really what I meant. I just think of episodes such Father's Day, Or Human Nature etc. in the third season, and I remember that the episodes can reach almost perfection. I just felt it was kind of a pity that the pilot was a bit average.
