Cherry had planned on arriving about half an hour earlier. Where the heck had the time gone? Well, no matter. To be honest, she was a little bit nervous about this. Not because she disliked Bret or Jemaine, nor because she still couldn't figure out why Bret was so uncomfortable and awkward around her, but rather because she absolutely hated being a third wheel. Really, there was little worse in the world, in any world, than being a third wheel. It generally meant a lot of sitting back and watching, feeling uncomfortable, and sometimes, invisible. Cherry liked attention too much ( ... )

Cherry was taking her time in coming. Or not. The time jumps were confusing and even if they weren't, he'd probably lost track of time anyway. Jemaine was acting weird. Jemaine had a date.

Not that it could be terribly successful if nobody knew what time it actually was. Bret did his best not to take a little comfort from that.

For now, though, it appeared Cherry had arrived. Cherry and her music and her fondness for him and, even through all the awkwardness he sometimes felt, her calming presence. She didn't know how he'd had a crush on her, and therefore their relationship was simple. Easy. Regulated and (though she was often unpredictable) relatively easy to understand. Like music, actually.

He opened the door, smiling out at her. It wasn't a real smile, though he did feel better for seeing her. He was on his way to real smiles. "Hey Cherry, come on in."

Jemaine had physically jerked at the knock at the door, his cheek slipping from his palm. He turned his head and mumbled, mostly to himself, pulled from his methodical thinking, and straightened to watch Bret pad to the door.

He really, really needed this distraction.

And Cherry was nice.

"Hi Cherry," he called from his seat after Bret, gradually standing to awkwardly hover to the right of the door. "How are you?"

Cherry slipped in the door, giving both Bret and Jemaine a bright, genuinely warm smile. "Hi guys," she said, a bit shyly, actually, her doubts managing to manifest in her voice slightly. "Thanks for having me over."

Okay, pleasantries.

"I'm doing great," she answered Jemaine. "No more headaches, at any rate. How are you guys?"

Oh, Din, please don't let that be a can of worms.

She made her way inside, over to a table, and began pulling some homemade sheets of music out of her hemp satchel. The song was right on the top of the pile. Hopefully, the boys would like it.

No more headaches. "That's great." Although, even if it made things easier, part of him wished he wasn't the only one who'd remember their week together. She was the only person in Rowan who'd cared about him and not also somehow intimidated him. He admired her, but he also related to her. He had to wonder whether her injury had affected their connection, somehow.

In response to her question, he gave the forced smile and a tiny shrug. "Surviving."

He closed the door and followed her to the table, peering over her shoulder at the music. "What's that?"
