Bonnie was walking back to her apartment, feeling very smug about herself. Why hadn't she ever thought to do this back when she lived at home? She would never have had to work, she could have just gone around convincing people to lend her small amounts of money. She didn't want to rob people, of course. That would have been wrong. She just wanted them to give her small donations, enough to buy herself some new clothes and some pillows and a nice rug. Maybe a drink now and then. Just enough for the basic necessities, that was all ( ... )

The thing about walking around at night in a city that was more or less medieval was that it was very, very dark. No streetlamps, no headlights from passing cars, no lights leaking out from under doors or out of windows. Nothing but whatever meagre amount of light the moon managed to reflect. Ianto had thought more than once that he really ought to ask Cho about making him some sort of enchanted torch. So he wouldn't run into people and knock them over. Yeah, that would be good.

"Shit!" he announced when he collided with her, and then, as he knelt down to help her -- "Sorry. Are you all right?" She was a full head shorter than he was. Fabulous work, Jones.

Immediately, Bonnie felt that she should apologize and before she could stop it, a string of "NoNoI'mSorryItWasMyFaultIShouldHaveBeenMoreCarefulI'mOkayReally" came gushing from her mouth. Her money--oh her beautiful money was going all over! She was just about to scramble to her feet to begin chasing after it--and then she had an idea. What a perfect opportunity.

She was just beginning to stand up when she gave a sudden cry and fell back to the ground. "Ow!" she cried, hand grasping her knee. Immediately, she gave a sharp gasp. "I think I--"

She didn't finish. She didn't have to finish. He could fill in the blank for himself. "I'll be fine," she finished, voice quavering just a touch. "I'll pick them up. Don't worry about it."

Better and better. "Don't move," Ianto instructed. "I'll get the coins." Or he'd try, anyway. It was dark, and they were small and all over the walkway. "How much did you have?" Couldn't be that much. He could just pay her back. He probably ought to be more concerned with whatever was wrong with her leg -- twisted ankle, probably. He hadn't heard the snap of a bone, and she hadn't landed in such a way that she ought to have broken anything anyway.

Bonnie didn't know how much she had lost. And suddenly, she felt a surge of annoyance. The man really should have been watching where he was going. She had just been about to count the money when he'd come stampeding around the corner and had positively charged into her.

A little dramatic, she admitted to herself, but it had been such awful timing. "Fifty," she responded with a slight whimper, rubbing her knee--which really did seem to be a little scraped, now that she thought about it. Oh well, it would heal in a minute or two.

Realistically, she didn't think she'd lost more than twenty dremlin. But he had barreled into her, so she might as well take advantage. It was better than biting him, anyway.
