"You're looking at him." Jack holds out one hand for a shake and grins at the man. "Captain Jack. And you are?"

The man returns Jack's smile with his own -- less of a grin and more of a hint, pleasure and satisfaction around his eyes, at the corners of his mouth.

He slides his hand into Jack's, and inclines his head. "Your new ambassador," he tells Jack. "From the Elves of the East. My name is John."

And as his hand brushes with Jack's, there's a little twitch, a jerk in the facade. Covered up again just as quickly, but the reaction was there.

"Well, hello, John." Jack moves their hands, squeezing John's firmly, because most natives so far have been fascinated by the handshake. Demons are doing it now with each other, and fairly regularly. So easily amused. One of the reasons Jack likes them.

This also gave Jack time to study John's face, to try and figure out that little crack in his cool demeanor. It meant something. It must have. A Majik? "I've known a few Johns is my time." Some more pleasant than others, and while Jack wasn't intending to flirt, a bit of it just came through anyway. No help for it.

John as a name for an elf, though, was a bit strange. Sure, he's met Marys and Karens and Roberts, but they'd been mostly demons and humans. This was the first elf he'd met with a common sounding name, and it ended up being John? He was pretty sure it was fake, but that didn't matter much. Jack would call him Amy if he wanted. "We should get you settled."

Sam is wandering. It's something he does, especially on the days when there's no work to be had yet and the weather isn't too bad. When his mind doesn't wander, it helps him get to know the city, the different quarters and establishments. Jhelbor is home now, and exploring the streets helps it to feel that way.

He spots Jack and the elf -- the ears are a dead giveaway -- greeting each other from a distance. Normally that wouldn't be so interesting, but they're speaking in front of the embassy, and all the signs point to the elf being a newcomer. With casual curiosity, Sam studies them with a shaman's eyes as he passes. Next to the red of Jack's aura (stronger than the last time he saw it) is a purple one, though there's something odd about it. Difficult to define. It's as though there are depths in it, bits that leap out and bits that plunge inward, almost like a three-dimensional picture ( ... )

Contrary to most elves Jack has met, the idle flirting isn't met with discomfort or rejection, from John. Just an easy, low smile, and a nod, "Absolutely."

His eyes flick across the street, to Penny. And he shoots her a smile, too -- and then his gaze falls on Sam. Sam, and the lingering glance he gives to John.

"Wait!" calls John, taking a step or two towards Sam. "You're Sam. Sam Lowry. Is that right?"
