Robbie's job in Jhelbor was nearly done. Only a handful of lost souls remained. The difficulty now was in tracking them down. He was fairly sure the one he'd been following by Elimyr's bubble was still in that area, but September could take care of her. He couldn't look at Elimyr again. He could barely even stand to think about her. Lucky thing, then, that he had this job to do. He worked at it until he was exhausted, slept for a few hours, and started all over again. He ate when he remembered, which was not terribly often. He wasn't entirely sure what day it was. It didn't matter. Nothing mattered but finishing this task and moving on.
He was in human territory when Cedric found him. He'd seen a ghost, just a flash of one, but it had disappeared in a crowd, and now it was gone. He was patient. He'd find it again, and he was so intent on doing so that he didn't notice his friend at all.
Ah, there he was. It was amazing how differently people viewed Robbie once it was clear that Necromancy could be used for something good and healing. Cedric nodded at the human soldier who'd pointed Robbie out. "Thank you."
He walked over slowly, giving Robbie plenty of time to notice him. "Hey," he said when he was close enough to be heard. He waited for his friend to acknowledge him, not sure if he was looking at something that Cedric just couldn't see, and not wanting to interrupt his work if he was.
Robbie startled at the sound of Cedric's voice. He knew there was no way Cedric had been attempting to sneak up on him, and even if he had, Robbie should have caught it. He would have not so long ago. You had to be alert to stay alive. How long had it been since he'd slept? Eaten? He couldn't quite remember. "I think it might be time for a rest," he said in greeting.
Cedric just stared at Robbie for a moment, and then smiled, allowing himself a little laugh. "I had a whole speech prepared to convince you to take a break." But he was still glad he didn't need it. "It's cold. Come on, let's get something to eat." Robbie was looking a little thin again. Cedric didn't like that. "And something to drink. Mulled wine? Smells and tastes like Christmas."
Christmas was a distant memory. Pleasant enough, but too far away to summon any genuine emotion in him. "Whatever's convenient, as long as it's not coffee. I don't plan on being awake much longer. How long have you been looking for me?" He was probably worrying Cedric again. Hopefully he'd feel better if they shared a meal.
