The worldwalkers have been staying in rooms along an entire wing of the palace -- the guest wing, if you will -- along the second floor. This also happens to be the wing in between the palace and the water. (This might be so that it's the first place hit if there's a naval attack ( Read more... )

Oh man, here we go, Barney thought, walking down the hallway. He hadn't exactly been avoiding Penny. Yeah, he'd kind of crashed and burned on that one, but in a nice way? Like, sure, it had backfired, but she was still really sweet and didn't obviously wish him dead or anything.

He just didn't really feel like dealing with that much sugar at the moment. Of course, it looked like she was pretty intent on her conversation with...

With...

He stopped dead in his tracks for a moment. No. Fucking. Way!

"Dude!" he said, excited, then lowered his voice because hello, the guy was not exactly popular with most of the people here. "Dude, where did you...? How did you...? What happened to you?" And then, because he couldn't quite help it. "Man, it's good to see you."

"Mr. Stinson," said Royal, with a sigh, and a bit of a wince. Useful enough, he supposed. It could be much worse. "I don't suppose you'd know where the King is, would you? Or the Prince, preferably. Prince Frederick, not Jason of Meredith."

"We do indeed," said Royal. "We made our acquaintance in Jhelbor, to start with."

And he looked to Barney, expectant for the answer to the question.

"Yeah, hey, Penny," Barney said in a rush, still focused on Royal. He wasn't disappointed that the guy didn't seem thrilled to see him, exactly. It was cool, y'know, whatever. But he wished he had a more helpful answer.

"Yeah, see, they've been telling us for days that we're gonna have an audience with the king tomorrow, but at this point it's pretty obvious that they're just avoiding us. And I haven't seen Fred around since we got here."

Okay, he had to say something that was at least halfway helpful. "But look, this whole side of the building is nothing but whatever we are," he said, gesturing between himself and Penny. "Worldwalkers, I guess; and wherever the king is, it's nowhere near here."

He shrugged, kind of sadly. "Sorry, bro. Wish I could be more help."

Cassandra heard noises outside of her door. At first, she ignored it. There was always something going on out in the hallway. But as she continued to work (attempting to turn a rather hideous blue dress into a proper chiton) a part of her ear was still attuned to the noise. Something was different. Something wasn't right ( ... )
