"Hey." He smiled, but he was tired and still half-lost in thought. "So that was...interesting."

He pauses for a few moments, to try to pull his thoughts together, stay down to earth and not fly off into any grandiose schemes.

"I mean, it's not like I haven't known for a while that we fell into the middle of a war, but...it seems awfully close now."

Well that was kind of an awkward example.

"There doesn't seem to be a side that's winning either. Which is the kind of thing that would give us an idea of the safest place to be."

He frowned in the general direction of the armrest.

"I'm not exactly planning to join the army. Not even if I had powers that actually did stuff."

He took her hand and stared and their interlaced fingers.

"It's been going on so long, I'm not sure there's anything anyone can do to make it stop. I don't know. We don't really know anything about this world."

He didn't want to tell her that there wasn't anything that she, specifically, could do, but it was basically what he thought.

That kind of thing had completely failed to occur to him. Well, that's why he wasn't one of the good guys. Not that he wanted to be. Or...okay, not important right now.

"I don't know. Maybe. Does that mean you want to go with the army? Or sort of follow behind it?"

He gripped her hand tightly for a moment, and then moved to put his arms around her.

"I'll go with you. Wherever."

His expression as he stared at the wall behind Penny's head was darker than his tone. He still couldn't quite let go of the anger and despair and even the numbness, and he wasn't even sure why not or what it was directed towards. He just tried to push it off to the side.
