"Really?" Bret relaxed a little at this. This was surprising, but not nearly as surprising as the dying part. He made a mental note to never make out with Penny or Billy, just to be safe. Not that he'd intended to, but he'd learned his lesson about that sort of thing.

"I was living in New York but I'm from New Zealand, originally." It was probably better to get that out of the way before someone got offended. "There's some other people here who're from Earth. And then there's some people who aren't but they've heard of it. It's sort of weird. But you get used to it."

"Umm. There's a place called Hyrule. And I think I've heard of some...M-something. And, um. Mars. Someone was from Mars." Oh, he sounded like a loony. "You get used to it," he repeated.

"I...don't think so." He tried to remember if he'd ever actually met that guy. Or the other guy, the guy who claimed to actually be Mars. "There's a couple talking animals, though. They're not from Mars, but, you know. Sort of like aliens."

He felt awkward. "Um. There's a dragon, too."

Bret blinked. "No." Didn't she just say she was from L.A.? Did she...did she think New Zealand was like Lord of the Rings?

He really hoped that wasn't it. Still, a subject change was probably a good idea. "I don't think Temeraire likes me. I sort of...talked to him like he was a scary dragon when I guess he just wants to be treated like a person. It was sort of racist of me. Speciesist." He fidgeted awkwardly, feeling guilty about yet another thing he'd done. He was so sick of wallowing.

Bret wasn't sure what it was about him that always made women want to comfort him. Being pathetic and weedy and weak would probably do it, wouldn't it? Maybe he should start acting tougher or something. Not that he wanted to impress Penny, although she was pretty.

But if this situation was anything like the last one, he really didn't know how Billy would act if he was jealous. And man, he really didn't want more people hating him.

"I'm just disappointed in myself, that's all." He shrugged it off. "Never mind about that. Have you been doing okay, otherwise?"
