The caravan has been getting steadily closer to the oasis, and while Hood can't tell exactly how many of them there are, it's certain that their numbers are greater than the current population of the oasis.
He doesn't know what their intentions are, where they are traveling to, if they're friendly or hostile; but he hasn't exactly felt at home with the travelers lately, and he's very curious.
It should probably bother him, objectively, the number of times his curiosity has led him alone into danger, but it doesn't. His sense of self-preservation is not terribly developed.
So what the hell? Hood walks out over the sand to get a closer look.
Cassandra heard the caravan approaching. There was a sense memory in the sound they made. She could recall, quite vividly, the excitement and anticipation such a caravan had once heralded in Troy. The arrival of Princess Andromache. Looking out at the small parade now, she felt certain there was royalty approaching

Tails was flying above the oasis when he spotted the caravan approaching. He howered in midai for several moments before darting to a tree and landing atop it. From there he watched apprehensively as the caravan drew closer. It looked like these people were here on specific business and prepared for trouble.
Frederick didn't take his eyes off of them, but canted his head to the side, towards the shaman riding next to him.
"He's a sorcerer, of great power," murmured the shaman, "and she is a shaman, equally bright."
"Have you ever seen her before?"
"No," and, if Frederick wasn't imagining it, the man sounded a little nervous.
"Hail in the name of the Prince, Frederick of the House of Meredith!" called one of the guardsmen, and Frederick reined in his horse, knowing that the rest of the group would come to a halt behind him.
He didn't speak; it could be very telling, what these people decided to say first.
Temeraire had found more of those rather tasty warthogs (or at least, they were rather tasty compared to fish all the time) and had had a rather large dinner, and had slept rather later than he had meant to. By the time he woke up, the caravan was really quite close, and it was high time for Temeraire to investigate closely. Maybe they were traders, and maybe they were selling jewels or at least some nice spicy peppers, not that he had any capital.
He's asked Guy if he wanted to go investigate closer, and was glad when he'd said yes. Well, not said, exactly, but anyway, there they were, Temeraire flying toward the caravan at a leisurely pace, with Guy held very carefully in one large claw. He remembered at the last moment not to fly over the caravan, since he did not think the horses had blinders, and decided to land directly in it's path instead.
