Sonic had made it into the forest while the guards were still gathering. He'd watched them from the shadows, not knowing whether or not to hope that the others came through.
Suddenly there was a disturbance in the foliage, off to his left. Sonic approached, slowly. As he got closer, he realized he recognized the figure.
"Jake," he whispered as he approached, hoping the man would recognize his voice. "It's me, Sonic."
"Sonic," Hood said, quiet but genuinely pleased. "It's good to see you again."
He considered the forest, briefly, then peered around the tree. No sign of Cherry yet, although if she was traveling as a bird he supposed she would be harder to spot and in no real danger. At least not from the guards.
This was doomed. Doomed. Doomed. Doomed. So why the hell was Cherry flying down to the forest? She told herself it was because she wanted to help. The truth was she just wanted to recapture the faith she had once had in people. Maybe if they could just save an innocent life, she could get her own back on track and know what she was doing. But there was no reason to cast her lot with the elves any more than any other races she had encountered. All of them were liars.
She spotted Sonic and Hood and immediately dove down, squawking to announce her arrival. She landed clumsily on Sonic's head. Maybe that beer had been a bad idea?
"Tell me about it," Sonic whispered, and it was at that moment Cherry landed on his head. At least he figured it was Cherry. Why else would a bird be landing on his head.
"Can I just mention that I don't like this idea?" He hissed at Jacob. He looked out toward the edge of the forest. They were far enough in that he figured they wouldn't be found immediately. "And believe me, I know about bad ideas. I have them all the time. But if you two," and whoever else was gonna be involved in this, "Are gonna get yourselves in trouble, I'm going with you."
Cedric had seen the unlocked portion of the conversation, which meant that the demons had seen it, too, which meant that this was a monumentally stupid idea. Well, not the most ill advised thing he'd done lately. They couldn't arrest people for getting together and talking, could they? Maybe they could. God, he really hadn't liked prison. But the other worldwalkers deserved to know what Arlen had said, about not hesitating to sacrifice them to save this world. Hopefully self preservation would win out.
He wasn't sure if people saw him leaving the city or not. He wasn't sparing anyone much attention. He just headed for the trees and didn't stop until he was past the first few. This reeked of shitty déjà vu.
