Early on Wednesday, Robbie and Cedric are pulled from their cell and taken to a huge, open square, gathered with demon bystanders - extremely similar to the setup with Mikney's tribunal ( Read more... )

The shaman steps to the front of the stage.

"Usually vision reconstructions are difficult, and unclear," she tells the crowd; "this one was as bright as day. I've never seen anything like it. This man," pointing at the demon PI, "brought the murdered in, and bound him in silk, as befits a mage; the other two entered, dismissed the demon, and, after speaking for some time of Gate Guardians and magic, that one," with a point at Robbie, "struck him in the face and delivered the killing blow. This is what I have seen, under vision reconstruction, so help me gods."

Cherry arrived when the crowd was fairly thick, which was not how she had planned it. She was forced to push her way through the crowd, as politely as possible, to get as close to the stage as possible. She had no idea what was going to happen, no idea what her role in all of this would be, but at the very least, she decided, she wanted to be close enough for Cedric and Robbie to see her. Cherry needed her friends to know that she would not abandon them.

Of course, hearing the shaman (shamaness?) talk was no great comfort to Cherry. Robbie and Cedric had fessed up about what they'd done and Cherry was beginning to process that information. Still, hearing it out loud, laid out like that, was a little creepy. She chewed on the heel of her palm a moment. She wanted to get them back to the others. They had to warn everyone about the Gate Guardians and what had happened with Arlen. But Cherry found her skills at rescue to be highly suspect. Could she really do anything for them at all?

Ginny arrived early in order to get a seat near the front, but she still had to fold her legs underneath her in order to see over the people in front of her. The first evidence presented sounded like a good sign to her. Cedric hadn't done anything, and everyone knew it. He had to get off. If the demons weren't going to be sensible about it, she was more than willing to stand up and tell them that, though Cedric was obviously an idiot, he was no murderer.

Robbie sat, head bowed, and listened to the charges. He had no intention of trying to deny any of it. He and Cedric had taken steps to ensure Arlen's message would get to Mikney if they were both executed, though Robbie intended to do everything in his power to get his friend released. Freeing Cedric and delivering the message, those were the important things. Saving his own life, or what was left of it, anyway, came third.

Cedric had gotten onto the stage with similar thoughts - get Robbie off so he could go back to Jhelbor and deliver the message. Of course, the woman, who seemed to be readily believed, telling the entire crowd that Robbie was the one to do the killing made that suddenly seem much more difficult. 'Damnit.' Well, he had time. He would listen and watch and plan what he wanted to say. It was always best to speak last, in any case - your words stayed fresh in people's minds.
