He never quite noticed how loud cleaning armor was, before. The occasional clink of different pieces clanging together, the rustle of oilcloth ( ... )

Cho hadn't actually been expecting him to be there, so when the escort hadn't just stopped her at the door, but had pushed it open and let her go through, she wasn't entirely sure what to do. There he was, though, sitting with pieces of gleaming armour laid out around him, and she walked over, because he didn't look too busy now, and she felt like she hadn't seen him in ages. "I'm glad," she said, and she was, though if he had been sharing the food this whole time she really should be bringing more ( ... )

People could be so strange, Markon thought. Or perhaps it was the universe that was strange. No, people.

Cho, his brother's killer, was one of the kindest, sweetest people he could remember knowing. On the other hand, Taline, whom he might very well have married if his twin hadn't talked him out of it, had turned out to be a selfish, controlling, amoral snake.

Strange world.

"I'm happy for your success," he told her. "And very grateful for the meals, of course."

"I'm not sure if it's my success, really, but thank you." It was her food, but Cordelia was very prominent and had set everything up and agonized over all her little details and seemed to be everywhere at once and immensely proud of her tavern. Cho got the feeling that maybe she was trying to put down roots. Cho was just an employee, and she was all right with that. Cordelia seemed nice enough when she wasn't stressed out, and Cho was happy hidden away in the kitchen, where the only people who could find her already knew she was there. "I like the name. I think it's cute. Not that I've ever actually seen a stoat in real life, though."

She set the basket down next to him and, after a quick glance around the space, sat down on the floor, her legs folded underneath herself in the position that all gaijin seemed to find baffling. "Are you going to be part of the expedition Niko is preparing for, or has that already left?" She held up her hand, palm out, and a little smile on her face. "I know, I know, no details. I'm not trying to pry."

"We used to get stoats in the fields, sometimes, back in Tisra," Markon said. "They were kind of pests - they'd eat the crops. They're beautiful animals, though, sinuous."

His brow furrowed a bit in confusion when she mentioned Niko.

"Expedition?" He shook his head faintly. "I'm not a commander," he explained. "They really don't tell us where we're going until we go."

"Was there anything you needed help with?" he asked gingerly. He knew she was getting around fairly well now, but he felt slightly guilty about receiving so much excellent food without giving her anything in return.
