The private investigator hadn't been cheap, but finding Arlen was what they'd set out to do, and with the three of them all working, the price hadn't been a problem. It wasn't as if they'd need stockpiles of money should they decide to return to Jhelbor after this.

Robbie wasn't happy, exactly, but there was a certain grim satisfaction in having accomplished this task. It was too late to protect Jhelbor, but there were still plenty of answers left to be found.

Cedric looked at the man in the chair, a strip of silk wound around his head and criss-crossing over his ears several times. He'd told the PI, no chance of getting it loose, none at all. He wanted him helpless. That stupid note on that stupid breeze, and what he'd done to Mikney, and the fact that he apparently wanted them all dead. He walked up in front of Arlen very slowly, and stood there, just staring at him, trying to stuff down everything he was feeling until he could project the calm that kept him centered. "Look at me," he said, voice monotone and hard. "Do you remember me?"

Arlen twitched, blinking.

His head was throbbing, and --

And he couldn't feel the wind.

No.

But he didn't panic, this time. He kept his calm, like Devorah actually trained him to.

"I don't have to," managed Arlen, his voice hoarse. "I can see the shadow on you."

"That's not what I asked you." Cedric's hand twitched, and, well, why not? He grabbed Arlen's chin and forced him to look at his face. "Do. You. Remember. Me? I'll give you a hint. You were dying." And Cherry saved you, he did not say. And you didn't tell us you were a demon, and I got ripped out of my body because they were trying to find you, and now you want to kill us? It had taken a lot of time and a lot of money to find this man, and if Cedric didn't start getting answers soon... he didn't want to admit to himself what he would probably do.

"I was delirious," snapped Arlen, "and feverish, and I thought I was going to die any minute. So no. I don't remember."
