After Penny's visit, Bret was in brighter spirits. She was so nice. He was glad they'd become closer.
However, his raised mood did not keep him from jumping when something heavy fell against the door. He left the bedroom to peek into the main room, wondering if he'd imagined Taryn's voice. Because really, she couldn't knock anywhere near that hard. She was like, well, a cat. Smallish.
He crossed to the door and opened it a crack, cautious. And then he slammed it shut again. Throwing himself away from the door, he hissed, "OhmyGodit'sapantherorsomething," and proceeded to stand behind the table, gripping the back of a chair nervously.
And then he realized his mistake.
Returning to the door, he peered out sheepishly. "...Sorry. Um. You look.. Uh. Do...your type of people age really quickly? You're much bigger than before."
Any other day that probably would've been extremely funny. Right now though she just got that particular look she did when she was somewhere around annoyed. "It's called evolution and age has nothing to do with it," she said around the bag in her mouth. "Coincidentally, Cho reacted about the same. Are you going to let me in?"
Evolution, as Bret understood it, was a very very long process. He stared at her a little owlishly as he opened the door wider. "Um. How long has it been for you since the time shifting started?" He paused, and then said. "Wait, you left the city. It's not like this out there, right?" How could she have evolved that quickly? Was she a giant bacteria or something?
Well maybe she could spare a moment to be amused. "I'm too lazy to keep track of the days," Taryn said, pading in past Bret. "Besides, evolution works different between Pokemon and animals. I found out from Cho that a lot of things are very different." Now wasn't the time to get into that if Bret didn't feel like it though, so she left that subject there. "So where can I put this?" she jerked her head to indicate the bag.
Bret didn't need to be told that Taryn was very different from normal animals. He'd already pretty much figured that out.
"Oh!" Bret hadn't even noticed the bag. "Um, I'll take it." He took the whole thing and set it on the table, only pausing momentarily to wonder why she had brought a bag of mandarines. "Did you want to see Jemaine?"
