my mother worked at the Lutheran Student Center for many many years, and is close friends with Pastor Deines. So I definitely remember that sculpture. Heck, I'm sure I was at the ceremony where they re-dedicated the restored statue in '83.
It wasn't that they didn't care about the statue. Part of it was the artists statement of the decay being part of the meaning. and then the other part of it was lack of funding to restore it.
Do you happen to remember when it became clear that there was no way they could restore? My husband thinks it became unsafe, but after looking at internet info I could never find anything like that.
