Wow, this is sad and sweet and beautiful and just... *melts and quivers and wibbles more than a little*
This is beautiful because I think it's the small moments in the worst situations that really strengthen a relationship like the one Will and Magnus share. This just strikes me as being so very true to real like and to these two. Gorgeous. Can't wait for more *hug*
How do you do this? That had to be my favorite chapter yet, and that's saying something.
There's this tension right now, in my real life with some of my friends, the exact one you were describing here -- how do you know what's appropriate, how do you understand when you come to those moments and you want to do more, how do you balance self-reliance and other-reliance, how do you know how to relate to people when there's no earthly way for the other to fix it? I really love the way Will said that Sally was Helen's friend even though she couldn't breathe air, so Helen was able to be there for Sally even being of a totally different species. I was holding my breath for that walk into Sally's room in the Sanctuary, since the images of the dead mermaids are still so fresh in my mind.
There were a couple of lines that I thought were really profound:
You can only lie to yourself for so long. And she goes on too long to sustain the illusions.
That reminds me of the Buffy episode, "Lie to Me," especially the truly heart-breaking
