When True Blood was on the cover of all those magazines, I was really hoping that "Stephen Moyer" was the name of one of the characters. As a sort of friendly artistic competition, a gesture of, "YOUR VAMPIRES SUCK. WE ARE SO MOCKING YOU."

The irony that he happens to be named Stephen Moyer and is playing a vampire somehow just isn't as funny. Because it doesn't imply any SMeyer mocking.

I don't think True Blood is in any position to mock Twilight anyway. It is of course leagues better, but the uncomfortable similarities of the wish-fulfillment vampire boyfriend are there and played straight, and it would be ill-advised of them to throw stones in their glass house.

Oh, I don't know... We're only four episodes in, and I don't want to be hasty. The book series started out as, well, what it was - sunny, naive young woman falls in love with brooding vampire, who must of course protect her both from himself and various other dangers - and then went rapidly downhill even from there, with a contingent of every kind of supernatural beastie showing up around the hick town so that their leader can fall in love with Sookie while we pretend that there's any chance in hell she won't end up with Bill, and Sookie discovers more of her own wonderful powers.

So right now, the TV show hasn't done that, and it's really trying with the vampires-as-minority thing, and it has a fun ensemble and Anna Paquin is of the good. But it's still a lot like a Harlequin romance only with more porn due to the HBO nature of things.

So. I guess... it's entertaining, but I wouldn't really recommend it as of yet.
