Life History: No history of psychological or behavioural disorders until recently. Earlier in the year, Yomi was involved in a car accident which killed her parents and left her with surprisingly few injuries. Early symptoms of PTSD manifested quickly afterward (i.e.: nightmares, avoidance of reminders of the incident, significant difficulties in interacting with others and going about day-to-day life), with severity at its worst in the days leading up to her parents' funeral.
This reaction is not surprising, considering the life she lead before the incident. The Takahashis were a wealthy couple (second-generation Japanese-Americans), giving Yomi constant luxury and comfort; the family unit itself was also very stable and loving. Yomi, while not traditionally "spoiled", nonetheless grew up very sheltered. She had a strong love of cute things, animals, and fairy tales, and overall had a very childish outlook on life for someone her age. It follows that she would thus have no real experiences in her life to draw from in this sudden, intense period of trauma; the sight of such violence and the prospect of being without her parents completely overwhelmed her.
It is believed that early dissociation began manifesting about two months after the accident. It was around this time that Yomi's legal guardian, Riyoko Saitou, and several of her friends at Cap Hill Preparatory School say that they noticed changes in her personality. Some of the changes were entirely positive in that her depressive states and nightmares came less frequently. Other changes were more puzzling, but not necessarily negative. For example, she would occasionally slip into more blunt, masculine speech patterns where before she had preferred a more polite, feminine manner of speaking. As well, she developed an interest in sports where she had little previously, particularly in track, basketball, baseball, and fencing (pre-accident, she played badminton regularly for exercise and not much beyond that). There was some minor trouble when she began refusing to wear the girls' uniform at school, preferring instead to wear the boys' style, but it passed as soon as it was pointed out that there was no specific rule forbidding her from doing so.
In the times where Yomi was more like herself, she took to socializing with her friend Delilah Jones almost to the exclusion of others. The two had only recently met before the accident, but they had already begun getting close by the time it happened, bonding over their mutual love of fairy tales and literature. In the months following the accident, the two would often visit one another at the house of Delilah's older brother, Antony Jones (a financier of Cap Hill). According to Mr. Jones, the two would mostly stay in Delilah's bedroom and write stories together. These visits happened more frequently the more the two felt pressure at school, in particular when select schoolmates began spreading rumours that Yomi, Delilah, and a fervent admirer of Yomi's, Roxanne Pondell, were homosexual.
A separate alter-ego manifested more clearly as the months went on. The name "Utena Tenjou" started coming up about a month previous to her committal. As "Utena", she claimed to have lost her parents as well, though this had been years ago in her childhood, dulling the pain of their deaths in her mind. In addition, she claimed to have been saved from her depression by a prince on a white horse, and that she was acting in a more masculine manner to emulate the style of that prince.
She later envisioned herself attending a grand boarding academy headed by "Akio Ohtori" (Antony Jones), with intricate student government structures and a secret dueling game where her best friend "Anthy" was a prize trophy called the Rose Bride. It is assumed that this story was in part learned and incorporated from her interactions with Delilah, as Delilah's own long-developing mental disorder began manifesting a similar fantasy several weeks before Yomi began talking about her own fantasy (see file "Jones, Delilah" for further details).
In the past week, the "Utena" personality has taken over entirely, prompting Yomi's legal guardian to commit her to Landel's Institute, where her friend Delilah is also being treated. Clearly, much of her alter's personality draws from her fascination with fairy tales and her desire to be strong for herself and her loved ones in the face of her parents' deaths. Potential treatment should focus on teaching Yomi healthier methods for coping with loss, encouraging her to mature in a more positive fashion, and introducing her to new friends in the institute.
[OOC: The following is not included in Yomi's file. Part of what spurred both Yomi's prince fantasy and Delilah's Rose Bride fantasy was the unwanted advances of Antony Jones in the private of his home. At first, Antony never actually took advantage Yomi sexually, but he did often compliment her on her "feminine beauty" and slip in subtle, inappropriate touches on occasion. Yomi liked Antony, having seen him as a gallant prince of sorts before her parents' accident, but felt flustered and uncomfortable with his advances after she began visiting Delilah more often. Hearing about similar abuse from Delilah convinced her that it was their feminine "weakness" that was making Antony want to look at them in such a way. Thus, she willed herself to become someone he could treat as an equal - a strong-willed prince, not a delicate princess.
The recent full-on switch to her "Utena" personality occurred after Antony finally convinced her to come to bed with him. He did this a short while after Delilah was committed to Landel's, claiming that he was lonely without his sister. The day after the deed was done, Yomi was completely shut out of her own mind. "Utena" was convinced that "Akio" was a good friend and a good brother, and she kept asking others where "Anthy" was, worried over having to protect her as the Rose Bride.]
