The Big Three

I have been amused by all of this cold, rational discussion about the prospective Auto Bridge Loan as to whether or not the country should "just let Detroit die" as if no actual people live or work here whose lives would be destroyed by that choice.

And when I say amused, I really mean seething.

Is there any possible way that we can punish the executives for excessive stupidity without punishing the other million people in the Detroit area, plus all of northern Ohio and Pittsburgh and all of the other auto-industry-support places?

I wish I could think of something, but apparently I'm not bright enough.

That would be my wish. I hope the CEO's get fired after the stunt with the taking private jets to Washington to ask for money stunt. The LEAST they could have done was jet-pooled (is that even a word?).

Argh.

I'm obviously not a business expert, but I read an article in the Tribune that said it might be better for the companies to file for bankruptcy, so they can renegotiate the contracts they're in. I obviously have no interest in seeing Detroit die, but it would be nice if the companies acknowledged they've made mistakes in not diversifying with more fuel-efficient vehicles.

"Renegotiate the contracts they're in" is code for breaking the UAW which is stupid. Yes, the union could have done some things differently, but they have made concessions to keep these companies afloat. Expecting them to be okay with the big three wanting them to work for $5 an hour is kind of ridiculous (not that you're saying that, but I do get that from other people ( ... )
