Soo agree on clothing. (Most of it being CRAP.) That's partly why I'm going secondhand-only this year: if it's gonna be crap anyway, I'm at least for frig sure not paying full price. -_-
I've seen really expensive clothing at our local Goodwill stores as well. Like you, I'm amazed at what junk it all is! The earrings look really cute. :^)
"Wonder if only people who know how to sew notice?" Only someone who's had to learn how to fit a commercial pattern to their own measurements will notice. I have well-developed Deltoid muscles right where the arm meets the shoulder. As a result, learning to alter the sleeves on commercial patterns so that they fit me properly was a nightmare. Remember the Sewing with Nancy TV show? I got my first hint about how to alter a sewing pattern so that it fit by watching Nancy demonstrate her slide and pivot technique. Then I read somewhere that reducing the height of the sleeve cap would help. I also found tips and tricks on sleeve fitting in weird places: Flamenco dresses have to have sleeves capable of a wide range of movement, Coco Chanel's ravings on sleeve fitting, and then this came up: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OTJuBleuekM This particular video really kicked the light bulb on for me when it came to sleeve cutting. :^)
You are so right about clothes! And yes, it was always hard to work with dark on dark. I only use my sewing machine for mending now, too. I used to make a few clothes back in the day, but it was never my forte.
Those earrings are beautiful! What a wonderful project!
Your book reading sounds great, too.
I always wanted to be a teacher, too. Never was, except for a stint at an independent school, where, I swear, the kids taught me more than I taught them!

I did some substitute teaching. The kids were pretty rowdy, testing me out I think.

Ah, the little darlings will do that. The ones I spent time with were nice kids.
