Generally the people I see making most of your rantypoints in their writing would class "Social Security" **AS** a government handout. Along with Medicare, Medicaid, unemployment insurance, etc.

Given the number of "Government keep your hands off Social Security and Medicare" posters I've seen, and the surveys where Social Security and Medicare recipients say they haven't been the recipients if government programs", I think they might be able to manage the cognitive dissonance.
