Yeah, it is kinda ridiculous. Being allergic to the stuff, I am completely in favor of banning smoking in public places (especially offices and restaurants), but the non-smoking drinker is, as you say, not really one to preach.
Of course, being a non-drinker and a non-smoker, I have the moral high ground and therefore can pass judgment on this issue. *snerk*
As a smoker, I know my habit is not everyone's cuppa. I have had a policy for years not to smoke in restaurants. Spencer is a non smoker so we generally ate in non smoking sections. Never smoked in an office. Never ever smoked around children. Period. In fact I will not join Spencer at the VFW because I hate the smoke in there and I am a smoker! Private clubs in Fla do not have to follow the smoking ban, that is why they allow it at the V.
It is the bar situation that makes me shake my head. As a person who has lost two good friends to liver disease due to drinking, I find it odd that anyone could say one bad habit is worse than another. I should say not you...but those who have been sitting in the bar smerking about the situation.
It's easy to say that drinking does not affect anyone but 'you', and to an extent that's true, but even if they're responsible about not actively endangering anyone, and they aren't violent drunks, it still hurts those around them. I do know that. It's just not as obvious as the smoker's haze.
Those of us who have different vices seem to be fond of saying ours are better than the other guy's horrible, nasty, downright vicious vices. Human nature at play, I think.
I suppose. I just found the whole idea of one vice being less dangerous than another sort of silly from some of those who answered this question. Aside from being a rabid anti-drinker and anti-drug person, I can't see that. Ban them all, I say. And I am serious. Instead of trying to outlaw the smoking of cigs here or there..just outlaw them all together. We would all be better off.
Biggest vice...caffine. I could live without the cigs but God help me if they ever make caffine illegal. LOL.
I am a drinker and a smoker. I do both moderately. Bars put drunk people out EVERY night of the week. I cant tell you how many times I have been walking home past the bar and seen very drunk person being escorted out. Now a days people drink to get F***ED UP. Don't now when that happened but i would be more afraid of those people's health than my health.
I never smoke indoors (unless at a casino because). People that give me dirty looks while i am standing ten feet outside of the bar need to get over themselves. I am abiding by the law. I get why the law was put into place. Basically, its no ones business. If you walk by and happen to smell it so what. Have you visited LA?
and ps anyone who says they are taking the 'moral highground' comes off sanctamonious.
It is the hypocrisy of it all that bugs me. Oh yeah, second hand smoke bad-bad-bad...oops we are not making any money! Let's bring back the smokers. So all the big concern for the health of everyone goes right smack out the door.
I know. Back when I was pregnant with my oldest, hubby took me to AC for the weekend. There I was minding my own business at the slots when some old guy sits right next to me with a really foul-smelling cigar. I asked him very politely to either move of put it out because I could stand the smell. He was rude as hell about it, so I felt absolutely no guilt or embarrassment at all when a moment later my lunch ended up on his shoes.
