I am looking for a book. It is a collection of short stories, science fiction, all by the same author, and all in the same universe. It tells the story of the history of humanity, from possibly the near future, through thousands of years and various galaxy spanning societies to the end of the human race as (I read the last story in the book) five

That sounds like it could be a Stephen Baxter. I'm not sure, though, as I haven't read all of his stuff.

That was my first thought as well - it sounds a bit like the Xelee sequence, which is the only Steven Baxter series I haven't read. I understand the format of that series to be different though.

try the find_a_book lj community. I'd hazard a guess that it identifies maybe 60-70% of the books requested, and it seriously rocks my world.
