Wow! I loved that story. I suppose I can see the addiction angle, if I squint and look at it just right. But mainly I see the more straightforward narrative, of the sacrifice of a parent with a chronically ill child. I find myself wondering what would happen if Luba allowed her pearl to continue to grow, but obviously she can't do that because of the requirements of caring for Maya. I can totally relate to that.
