Humble pie doesn't taste so good

So I've never really struggled with my weight. I'm not one of those naturally stick-thin girls but neither have I ever had a problem with my weight. I'm generally satisfied with how I look, how I fit into clothes, etc. Mostly I was, am just concerned with living an overall healthy lifestyle, which includes going to the gym at least four times a ( Read more... )

It sounds to me like you're probably doing better health-wise than the vast majority of the population. I'm not sure I'd be too worried that you don't fit on a nice neat bell curve (one in no small part decided by genetics).

I suppose I'm... skeptical of the assessment of someone who is clearly trying to sell you on a product, a product that thrives primarily on targeting a person's body image insecurities and making them feel bad about themselves.

Oh, I'm not worried about fitting on a bell curve, but I am concerned about the body fat. That can't be healthy. And I know myself: I am a creature of habits; comfortable habits. I've been doing roughly the same workout for three years.

I'm always skeptical of the selling angle too, to be honest, and I've put off the free training session for awhile because I didn't want the guilt trip. But he really didn't make me feel insecure; he was very professional but personable as well. He was very nice - not at all pushy or "you need to do this if you want to look good." Mostly I came to my own conclusions about some changes I should make. And that's how I get out of my rut, when something like this shakes me up.

Heheh, I completely understand about habits! In that light, I can see the value of it for sure. Sometimes that push is the thing that gets us going forward again.

It was one of the electrical ones right, not calipers? Those things are a bit unwieldy and aren't always accurate. If you're happy with your current level of activity (and you should be - I was blown away by 4-5 times a week) and you're worried about your health, you should talk to your doctor. Have a physical done- blood work, cholesterol, blood pressure, the whole shebang (especially if you've got health insurance - if not, or if you're deductible is high, skip the bloodwork). They'll tell you if you're healthy or not, and they're not going to try to sell you anything ( ... )

Yeah, the thing reminded me of an xbox controller for how it was shaped. I'm sure it's not 100% accurate, but even giving it a 5% error of margin, it's still too high a number. :/

But in all seriousness, I'm not really *worried* about my weight. But he did give me some food for thought. I've been doing the same workout for 3 years - even I know that you need to vary it up a little bit.

I'll probably do something like you suggest - a short term training plan - but only after I know what's going to happen at work. I don't want to invest in something when I may not have a job after Christmas. :/
