I hope that this won't mean bad news for publishers! It is sad that bookstores might be going the way of record companies.:P We will just have to make it our personal mission to make sure that books never go out of style.;)

This news has upset me so much; I never dreamed they would close completely. I've already been feeling like local bookstores are endangered, but this means that there now won't be a single bookstore in my immediate vicinity...Borders bought out the closest indie bookstore years ago, and the nearest B&N and Half-Price Books are a nearly 40 minute drive. What next?

Oh no! You'll have to do a lot of book ordering online it seems, but the experience of being in a bookstore can't be replaced by the internet. ;___;

POWELLS.COM

Indie bookstore in Portland OR, excellent quality of used books (I've bought about...15 in the last month of their used books) for discounted price plus they have new books and discounts and IT'S LOVELY. VIVA LAS INDIE BOOKSELLERS!

But seriously, I'm lucky because I have a B&N just as close as the Borders. I'm going to stock up when the discounts start happening, but I like to BROWSE.

(Though as my life's goal is to be an indie bookstore owner, I should be happier about this...)

Barnes and Noble is actually closer to me than Borders (or any indie bookstore that I know of too), but the closing of Borders and what it means for the book industry scares me. ;-;

I also enjoy Half Price Books - though technically I suppose you can't count them as an "indie" bookstore since they're a chain. Still, used books FTW!

How long did it take for your used books to travel by mail from Powells? When I order stuff from Amazon, it's usually here in a few days.

Same. It got from Portland to Orlando in 2 days and then it languished in Orlando for like six days :op
