Last Saturday I determined that I would christen my new stand mixer with a batch of these cinnamon rolls. The recipe looked easy, I had all the ingredients, and a friend was coming over later for movies and fun

Oh, wah, that's too sad! :( Yeast is so tricksy. My house is horribly drafty too, so what I usually do now, and it works pretty well, is put my dough in the oven on a rack over a bowl of warm water, which gives me about the right temperature for rising.
But man, I've always been so scared of bread recipes until recently, because I watched my mom fight too many losing battles with dough that wouldn't rise. It's SO disappointing.
Still, it is nice at least to get story potential out of such things! ^_^
Yeah, there's nothing like baking to make one feel like an absolute failure at everything.
Lucky for me, I have a bread machine for when I really want fresh bread. Cheating perhaps, but oh so delish.
I think an oven thermometer will do the trick. I don't know if I have a big enough bowl to try your method as the only big one I have will be the one I use to make the dough rise. XD
always assume you have a random, non-drafty, warm spot for yeast to rise in that isn't the oven
Yeah. I asked for help at cooking and one person suggested something called an "airing cupboard." But apparently she's in the UK where they build houses with these mysterious warm, draft-free places. I suppose if cranked my heat up to 80 it would be warm enough to rise just sitting out on the counter, but my heating bill is high enough this winter. lol Oven it shall remain, though I wish I had an electric blanket to try your method. That sounds like a great idea.
