Interesting discussion about fictional feminist icons over at Feminist Mormon Housewives. I feel like I should defend Emma Woodhouse (not as a feminist icon, but as a character I enjoy reading about), but I'd have to agree with most of the commenters and say that Elizabeth Bennett should be on the list ( Read more... )

The only reason I got the Great Awakening one was that I had to read Jonathan Edward's sermon in my high school English class (totally in the spirit of the power of language.) But I did pretty good considering I had just woken up from a nap when I took it. ;)

I also just spent waaay too much time on New Dress a Day, partly in fascination she has all these places to wear gorgeous reclaimed dresses, but it's a really nifty link. :)

15/15, oh yeah. ;) Though I may have peeked at emmiere's Great Awakening answer.

I liked Emma Woodhouse. Have these people never seen Clueless? :P

What I like about Emma Woodhouse is that 1) she really is clueless (heh) and 2) she learns from it. And 3) she's still herself anyway. It's a fun book (and Clueless is probably the best adaptation of it, amusingly enough. Sorry, Gwyneth Paltrow! Though I like that one, too--mostly for shallow reasons having to do with Jeremy Northam and his British accent.)

So yup, Emma Woodhouse--not perfect. Probably not much of a feminist icon. But still a memorable, interesting character.
