Has anyone read The Lies of Locke Lamora yet? I started this week and I love the world-building... but the title character is currently leaving me cold. I'm wondering if it's worth it to continue.

I'm sure everyone needs an illustrated version of Tom Lehrer's song 'The Elements.' (Tune stolen from Gilbert and Sullivan, if I remember correctly ( Read more... )

Awww! That sounds like an awesome family get-together. Mine was nice, but not nearly as fun!

And that Tom Lehrer thing is adorable. I especially love the bit at the end with all the elements they've discovered since the song was written. You know I once heard Tom Lehrer give an interview where he was asked if he ever considered getting back into the satiric business and he said he couldn't do it now. He feels like the world has gone beyond his satirical abilities at this point.

Yes, I have. And spot on. I wound up annoyed I'd finished it! The world building was awesome but the characters were boring and I became increasingly grumbly about the inherent sexism, which I am wont to do when not suitably distracted by, you know, characterisation. ;p

Hee! Characterization would definitely be a nice change at this point, because right now all that I'm getting is: oooh, preternaturally good at stealing and conning! Which doesn't make me care about Locke and his colleagues at all.

I may just throw this book into the get-rid-of pile and go finish reading Zorro, which I've been meaning to do for a while. Thanks for your feedback!

("They throw your clothes away? Wait... how do you get picked to be on the show anyway?")

Hee. But then they give you all kinds of $$$ to buy NEW clothes. Dignity, Shmignity.

I'm glad you had such a good time! I celebrated with just my immediate family this year, which was nice, but quiet since there's only 4 of us. :)

Yeah, I think I'd be ready for some shamelessness if I got a trip to NYC and $5000 for a new wardrobe out of it. But I dress much better than I used to thanks to the show... I've classed myself out of range! Now I'm a moderately badly dressed shlub instead of a really badly dressed shlub!

Yay! I'm so glad you had a good Thanksgiving. Also, I'm impressed that you all actually played a ballgame after eating... we sit in a stupor for most of the night.

We should make a date to chat on AIM!

PATAKA! *spins you around*

Yay, I'm glad to see you here! And yes, AIM would be great. Er... got any preferences? Saturday and Sunday are both looking pretty open for late morning/early afternoon. Or some evening next week.

Ooo sunday or saturday will work... what time is early afternoon? (and what's the time difference again... 2 hours? or 1?)

One hour time difference, I think. So early afternoon for me (say 1 or 2 pm) would be around 2 or 3 pm for you. Which means Saturday would work better for me than Sunday.

Failing that, Monday or Tuesday night next week is open for me, I think.
