I can handwave some of Twelve's obnoxious behavior as a response -- one which unfortunately seems to come naturally to his character -- to his depression and loss of confidence in himself. Capaldi is playing that well. (When Eleven said something on the phone along the lines of "this regeneration is going to be a doozy," he wasn't kidding.) Although, how did we get to the Doctor being at such an emotional low? Even if memories of not having killed the Time Lords after all didn't hold up, he still ended Eleven's era at a high point. Coming back to a bad regeneration is the only thing that makes any kind of sense to me. (Shades of Six, perhaps

I agree that the kids were cute -- unlike some viewers, I like having children in the show -- and I really liked Maebh. But...Clara told her she had no imagination? WTF?! (Don't get me started on the apparent"psych meds are unnecessary" message.) Honestly, there was so much idiot plot in this episode (characters behaving uncharacteristically stupidly to make the plot work) that I found it hard to enjoy any of it. Let the children die so they won't miss their parents? The Doctor giving up? A confused zoo tiger more scared of a flashlight than an unfamiliar environment and strange humans? Extra oxygen repelling a solar flare? AAAARGH. As I said above, Capaldi -- hell, all of the actors -- deserve so much better. /rant

I mean he wasn't the Doctor in this episode, because... totally out of character throughout. But at least he wasn't being abusive.
Which is to say, oh dear me yes, Capaldi deserves *so* *fricking* MUCH better.
