famous theater fails at fanfic

I just got back from seeing the new musical The Blue Flower. According to the website, it's about "four lovers and friends finding their way through a world in pieces" during and after World War I. The characters are loosely--and I mean LOOSELY--based on German painters Franz Marc and Max Beckmann, plus Dada collage artist Hannah Höch, and Marie ( Read more... )

Huh, I wonder if I internalized all that when I chose this hairstyle? The look I was going for what is I think of as 'American business feminism' (the kind of women who think the big feminist issue is whether corporate women are paid the same as corporate men, and have - mostly undocumented - maids to raise their kids, and can't see any tensions between feminism and capitalism), but perhaps the line between that and 'sexist cliche of decadence' is pretty fine. Maybe it comes down to whether you're wearing a corset, or a pantsuit :-/

Ooh, I am psyched to get a comment from you about hairstyles, because (more than anyone else on my flist) you always have great things to say about feminism AND fashion. I <3 your Devil Wears Prada fics.

Maybe it comes down to whether you're wearing a corset, or a pantsuit
Hee! But in both cases, there's a complicated lineage (going back to the 1920s and the Louise Brooks bob) that I would love to know more about. Something about that hair style is meant to signal "independent woman", but to do so in an aesthetically pleasing way, which can potentially lead to various kinds of objectification.

That said, I would totally get a bob if my hair could do it. (I will always have Hermione Granger bushy hair). I got this icon because I love the look, and not just so I can illustrate my vaguely feminist ramblings.

Sorry about this slow reply, but now I'm in time to send you good wishes for the new year!

Not too geeky for this LJer!! I heart Hannah Höch, and am sorry to hear that she was reduced to a slinky Weimar cliché. Some day we will make a better fanfic, yes?

(Also, I've been trying to get a proper Brooks cut for years, but somehow tend to wind up with Anna Wintour instead. Ah well. Work in progress.)

Thank you for sharing my geekiness! Yay for another fan of Hannah Höch.

Some day we will make a better fanfic, yes?
Yes! After reading your marvelous Calypso, I would love to see what you do with the Weimar artists--Jack Harkness optional, but welcome. Or maybe I'll someday bridge the gap between my academic interests and fandom, enough to add my bit to the "As Chris Isherwood said..." period of Jack's life.

(I would love to get a Brooks cut myself--hence this icon, which is my fantasy look--but I have incurably curly, fly-away hair. Your Anna Wintour look sounds like a good sleek option!)

Sorry about this slow reply, but I loved getting your comment, and I'm wishing you happy holidays!
