Hoarding fascinates me- partially because I'm a bit of a hoarder (though thankfully nothing like the people that end up on those shows) and partially because of the psychology behind it. The way people feel about their stuff (sometimes including garbage like dog hair) is sometimes surprising. I saw one show with a woman who went through people's garbage because her father used to own a junk shop and she was in the habit of it. She said she didn't want to waste anything, but she resisted giving items to Goodwill and her house was so crowded that she couldn't make use of the things she'd collected. A lot of the hoarders I've seen on these shows are afraid to get rid of things that might be valuable, and it makes me wonder if there's some kind of instinct behind that, or if it's all psychological. The story you shared was inspiring- it makes me want to get going on the things I've been putting off.

yeah, i am always working on getting rid of stuff because I'm a terrible clutterbug. And i've been cleaning a lot this week, despite quadruplign my internet time :)

The hoarding-hoarding that comes with anxiety (instead of, i got depressed and didn't clean, or i'm disorganized and can't find things, or whatever) seems more like an addiction to me than anything else - instead of meth or alcohol or gambling, they're buying/keeping/seeing.

I think on that level, we can all sympathize, because we all have consumption & self-soothing habits that we deal with in healthier or less-healthy ways.

I am a professional in the field of hoarding; that is a very good way to describe it. I am trained at cleaning out places, and I am pretty good at it. I go to people's houses and help them clean. And, the stuff they throw out I get to keep. Then I sell it ( ... )

Yeah, I think there are a lot of hoarders out there.

Not just the ones with giant piles of crap hidden, but a bunch of people who have that same emotional response to stuff and manage not to let it take over, but are fighting it all the time - kind of like the world's full of dry drunks and people who would really like to beat people up but don't do it.
