Random

I am looking for a device that will do something to generate a random number for me, notify me, but not be obvious about what it is doing. I am thinking of some kind of wristwatch that will randomly vibrate or something to tap me ( Read more... )

Why don't you use something random in the cards? anonymous September 19 2006, 06:36:30 UTC
Do your own version of props. You could base it off of flop ranks and colors. If the flop has exactly one heart, then you take the alternate line. Nobody will know because looking at the flop is standard.

I do it myself to truly randomize my play when I'm playing against someone that's paying attention. Here are the tricks I've used ( ... )

This and the advice above is pretty good-- I would like something more detailed, though. The card-protector-that-is-a-watch is a good one, I am sure I can find something like that.

I've seen this discussion in a number of poker journals, but I remain skeptical that this level of pure game theory is necessary, even against perfect competition. I also wonder (other than tournaments where your table draw is not under your control) if it's good game selection to be playing in games that require this solution often.

That said, I would probably look at the dealer's chip rack and generate a number based on how many chips on the top of each row are face or face down. There's usually enough stacks there to seed some algorithm.

I wind up playing a lot of 3 handed where it is me and another good player chopping up the bad players money. It requires me to play many HU pots vs. the good player, so having a strategy to at least not be taken advantage of is really good. It is also nice to have randomization because I am not a robot, and if the other guy has been beating up on me or whatever it affects how often and when I will try to make moves.

I think "okay I have to mix it up sometimes here", but in reality I never bet-3-bet the flop with just a gutter or I never bet-3-bet the turn with middle pair and a flush draw or whatever. Obviously those plays are wrong by themselves, but they have to be done occasionally vs. good players to throw them off. One thing I always liked about how you played was you mixed up your play pretty well; I just thought that the games we were playing in did not really require it. lol.

On your last point, you are probably quite correct. It took me a very long time to figure out when to apply what, and I often made the proverbial “wrong move at the right time”, or vice-versa. I don't really mix up my limit HE game very much anymore - the rare times when I play it, I'm against an entire field of competition that I can outplay with only one or two gears. I think I never figured out how to really shift gears profitably at a limit HE table.

In NL HE, I have focused a lot on “feel” (as some people call it, I think this term is usually too imprecise to be useful, although I can't think of a better one at the moment), and therefore make stark and quick adjustments in my play based on an overall sense of the table mood. However, traditional mix-up plays and quick gear changes work much better at tables with four or more opponents, because you can use one event or a few events to send different messages to many people. If you've got a good read on how different players will understand the same message differently, you ( ... )

Be More Human liha_pirakka September 21 2006, 18:47:15 UTC
What makes us human, I think, is in a sense our capacity to _be_ random. Most decisions are logical progressions from certain facts in our lives. I went to the store because I was out of bread, and bought a certain wheat bread because I am trying to lose weight. I am trying to lose weight because of an idea of musculature as being important that I saw on TV. I admire TV because of its flashing lights and colors. We can include psychology in this factual chain if you want to - it doesn't make a difference. By which I mean, you can count a person's psychology as amongst the factors which logically lead to a decision. I care about body image because I'm insecure due to an insult I received as a husky 8 year old ( ... )
