mic check: some thoughts about meetings and technology

Last night I decided to go the Occupy Boston GA, partly because of wanting to show support for the occupiers after the eviction from Dewey Square, partly to see if I could find out what would happen next and also partly because of a conversation I had on Friday.  On Friday at noon, I went down to Dewey Square to sing protest songs with the Dewey ( Read more... )

Robust tech is good. A mike check is more robust than any PA I've ever had to schlep.

"Hard to break" is definitely something to add to its list of benefits. But, after 2 hours of shouting in the cold, not "unbreakable".

Agreed -- though if we still have ten voices working out of a hundred, it still works. RAID communications, so to speak.

Time will tell if the "mic check" concept becomes one that reverberates over the next several decades as a specific protest meme.

Much appreciated. The louder/softer dynamic became really clear to me in a subgroup of about 50 people. Some people spoke without mic checks, and could be heard. But other people asked for a mic check, and probably would have had a lot of trouble being heard without it. Just another example of the innate flexibility of the tactic.
