I wonder if the billions spent on space exploration could be used to better man kind as a whole

yup, i think it could and should be. why the hell are we trying to leave this planet without fixing it first? when my apartment is messy i'm EMBARASSED to have guests over. if someone from another planet stopped by i'd feel humiliated about that whole darfur thing.
besides, someone else is going to find us first. i just hope it's the folks from gallifrey before the ones from skaro...

You should read Packing For Mars by Mary Roach. Its a great book about what the billions of dollars really goes towards.
