Cold turkey

The Mess-o-Potamia is not a proxy war between blocs-- it's not Vietnam. It's not an occupation-- it's not Western Europe or Japan in 1946. It's not even the repressive conditions under the Treaty of Versailles that Germany withstood after a Great War caused by entangling alliances ( Read more... )

I do resent more than anything else how poorly pro-Iraq opposition counters claims of "defeatism." We did not ask for this war. We were personally invested in it for about a minute before we realized it was a little bit too much for what we need. Is it really that hard to say that we would rather accomplish something than be in endless pursuit of some kind of victory just to say we're chasing victory?

Our political leaders deal far too much in hollow imagery where prideful choices end up substituting for reality.

I know what you mean about being frustrated on that lack of a counter to "defeatism," but

You can't be defeated if you can't win. We can't fail to achieve a goal because there's no goal other than "not getting killed."

I know the stated goal is currently "provide enough stability to get the government and country functional," but I'm not sure if they're telling the truth about that goal or if it's even possible. They've changed their story so many times and the situation sounds so hopeless... I dunno.

I've thought seriously about going there myself to see it for myself and judge for myself. The VIP tours our politicians take and the highly-ensconced journalists can't be getting the whole picture. If I don't shave or cut my hair for a couple months I could blend in well enough.

I would value your opinion were you not a communist pinko terrorist fascist liberal radical reactionary peacenik.

And "Surge" is the name of a defunct soft drink-- nothing else.

Meh. I tried it years ago when I still drank soda routinely, but I was never big on Mountain Spew or its imitators. Its name annoyed me because it was one of the first stupidly-named eXtreme!!!1 drinks.
