"The Hour"

Poll BBC2 9pm. Apart from Romola Garai (my future wife) it had nothing to recommend it. Formulaic and pedestrian are the kindest epithets. A sinister Magyar named Tomas Kiss (or Kiss Tomas) appeared and looked balefully on as 1956 London was given the Beeb treatment. One hopes that next week it will improve.
Now to Russia. Is it true that OVIR/SVR/KGB ( Read more... )

I can't say I've seen them all but of the ones I have seen Spartacus wins hands down. 2001 and A Clockwork Orange were pretentious twaddle whilst Lolita was OK but I preferred the Jeremy Irons version. Doctor Strangelove had its moments but was a bit overrated really and I've only seen a bit of Full Metal Jacket. I've never heard of Paths to Glory or Barry Lyndon whilst Eyes Wide Shut was obviously avoided as it committed the cardinal sin of featuring Tom "shortarse" Cruise in a leading role. Unforgivable really.

I think Tom did well. Did you ever see him as T.J in Magnolia? Spartacus is a masterpiece, Clockwork was GOOD for its time, Lolita is like an onion with layers, Strangelove is complex, Kubrick wanted Sellers to play Kong AS WELL as 3 other parts. Paths To Glory, very worth watching!
Lyndon? Costume shite, his only duck. Eyes is a great movie.

I've never seen a whole film with him in it as I just hate the little shite so much. Even his famous ones that everybody is supposed to have seen like Top Gun I haven't. There's just something about Scientologists that really grinds my gears.

Top Gun is wank but give him a fair go - Magnolia was Top (even if 59 mins too long!). As for his faith, publicly they ARE great. Privately (cont p.9)

Oh boy. This is tough. I'm a little sad that The Killing wasn't included in this poll. That's always been one of my favorites. I saw Eyes Wide Shut only once, and it was alright. I wouldn't actively seek it out to watch it again, but if I were in a situation where the opportunity to see it again presented itself, I'd have no problem doing so. Spartacus was a great epic that was able to keep my attention despite its long length. I have not seen Paths to Glory. I'm still not sure what I think about 2001. On one hand I can appreciate the artistry of it, but as a film, it never really grabbed me. I loved Full Metal Jacket. I was recommended Barry Lyndon awhile ago but never got around to watching it. Lolita is a movie that I didn't like at first, but it's grown on me with repeated viewings. A Clockwork Orange is a little dated, but I still really enjoy it. Dr. Strangelove is magnificent and was such a bold movie to make for its time. I'm going with Strangelove. It's the film that's most suited to my tastes and one of the few on the list ( ... )

Most of that final scene was ad-libbing from Sellars!
