Year 1 - Summer - Bennett

It's been a while since I last picked up my diary,

things have been pretty hectic with all the building going on.  Being surrounded by forest meant wood for building wasn't a problem, all the other supplies were, but we made a couple of trips downriver and raided a few hardware stores and we've managed to bodge together some houses... or shacks, or sheds, or whatever you might want to call them.  But to be honest they feel like palaces after being on the run for so long.

In the middle of the clearing is an abandoned farm.  It has provided us with a great source of tools and seeds.  We even dug up some of the trees from the overgrown orchard and dragged them to some of the houses.  I, myself, have an orange tree which is great as we've all been lacking in vitamin C.  Bridget Harris is our horticultural expert and has given everyone some tomato seeds to plant, she says even an idiot can grow them, but we'll just have to wait and see, I've never been that green-fingered...

Bonnie was my first visitor, and I know what I said about zoms being harmless but... I don't know, being alone with her kind of creeped me out, which is a shame because we got on really well when the group was living together.  I hope she wasn't too offended.

After my encounter with Bonnie I decided I needed to brush up on my interpersonal skills, the future of our settlement depended on everyone getting along and working together.  Maybe I need to smile more, I seem to always have a stern look on my face.

Our homes are pretty comfortable considering.  We used all the furniture from the old farm and picked up some pieces on our forays for building materials.  It does seem weird sleeping in a bed again.  I keep waking up through the night thinking I heard a noise outside, I guess it will take a while to get used to.

I had a visit from that creep....I mean that... nice... pleasant, Lucas the other day. I hadn't seen anyone for a couple of days and had been too busy setting up my garden to go visiting myself.  I was so pleased to have human company that I even hugged the creep... I mean, guy.  All I ever hear from him is Callan this, and Callan that, he's such a bore.  But for once I actually enjoyed hearing about what him and Callan had got up to at college, even if I was hearing it for the fourth time.

I even treated him to a ham and mustard sandwich with my special loaf of bread.  I had made it with some flour I found at the farm, the flour was okay, once I had picked out the weevils.  Bread had never tasted nicer, its amazing what we will eat now, I'm sure I would have barfed at the thought of eating it before.  And the tinned ham and mustard were only a few months out of date... what's 6 months when it's sealed in an airtight tin?

Once he had finished taking me all the way from fresher year to senior year Lucas started to talk about the weather.  Oh my god, could anyone be more boring?  I was so relieved when it started to get dark and he decided to head home, how poor Quinn puts up with living in the same house as him I don't know.  I headed out to the garden for a quick boundary check before retiring to bed.

Stupid Lucas, stupid zombies, stupid, stupid, stupid me!   How did I ever think living with 8 strangers was going to work?  They probably all hate me... I'm pretty sure I hate most of them... nothing like 3 months living in close proximity to bring out all your bad points.
