River stared vacantly past the controls, the crunch of bones and separation of flesh echoing sickeningly in her memory. She had killed most of them; drunkards, thieves, and whores alike. They’d all looked the same then, grey and disposable; cattle for the slaughter. She was a murderer, a living weapon fashioned against her will and there was no going back.

Setting the ship to auto-pilot, River dropped her bare feet to the ground and left the cockpit, feeling as cold as the lifeless bodies that haunted her conscious. If there was warmth to be had, she couldn’t feel it, couldn’t sense it, nor did she deserve to.

As she traveled the dark corridor, River didn’t notice Jayne until he was right in front of her, eying her suspiciously before turning towards his bunk.

“Ain’t it past your bedtime?” He asked derisively, grabbing the handle and pushing his hatch-door open.

River stilled, affronted. Loathing dripped from his words. “And yours?” She taunted, supplying him ammunition. “Or do the treacherous sleep?”

Pausing his descent, Jayne backtracked and turned, glaring at River. Raising a warning finger, he walked her back against the wall, his broad shoulders tense with rage.

“Now look here, you little witch.” He ground out. “Only reason I put up with that smart mouth of yours is ‘cause…” Stopping suddenly, Jayne’s seething gaze fell upon the lips that relentlessly provoked him, proximity and memory distracting his train of thought.

River looked up into Jayne’s raging blue eyes, the ones that blamed her for Wash, for Book, and couldn’t help but feel victorious. Her heart pounded fiercely, blood gushing deafeningly in her ears as she awaited his punishment.

"Fuck it." Jayne cursed hotly, and leaned in, kissing River hard and painfully; the same way he inevitably had every night since Miranda.
