To be vague about it, it simply wasn't my kind of writing. I'm definitely not a big supernatural/thriller fan in novels but I bought it in the Madrid airport, where selection was understandably limited, and was drawn by the comparisons to Garcia Marquez and Eco. I got about 150 pages into it and just didn't find it particularly compelling or complex and thought that Zafon lacked the fluidity of language that the other authors have. It was more like Dan Brown does Foucault's Pendulum than what I was looking for. It wasn't bad as much as it didn't hold my interest.
I read it in English and I'd read that the translation was pretty good (I'd sort of had my eye on it for a while before buying it) but maybe it would have been better in Spanish. I didn't think it was BAD at all, but just not the kind of thing I was going to make myself finish when I could be reading something else. I'm not the fastest reader and I have a limited amount of time (BUT LOL WATCH ME SPEND MAINLINE WHOLE SEASONS OF TV SHOWS IN A DAY) so I just switched to the next book on my list.
