So I am visiting Oklahoma, where my cousin, thefirethorn, has ordered me to blog about our adventures because she loves reading about her family

I laughed more at that anecdote than I probably should have.
I haven't had a chance to play yet, but I bought the Dixit game for my friend with small but intelligent kids. It's sort of like Apples-to-Apples in that it's an association game, but it uses pictures as the starting point instead of words so it's accessible to non-readers. It seemed really neat, it's not actually aimed at kids... people take turns giving a clue that describes their picture, and then everyone else picks a card that matches the description and put them in a pot, and people try to guess which card was the one actually put in by the person giving the clue. It seems like it might be a good fit for your nephews because you don't even have to play the game as is, you can just make up stories from the cards, which are very attractive and evocative.
One of the Dixit games (it's a series now) can be found at most Target stores. If you end up trying it, I'd love to know what you think.
