Throwing rocks at the Dead Poets' Society

Mar 02, 2011 23:35

A few minutes ago, I read this entry on someone's lj as Quote of the Day:

Dying
Is an art, like everything else.
I do it exceptionally well.
-Sylvia Plath

Before even stopping to think, this was my immediate gut response:    Oh, shut up, you putz.

Of course, Sylvia is dead and therefore shut up for all time, so it's probably in bad taste for me to be ( Read more... )

Hi Roku! Good to see you on LJ!:D

I am in agreement with your assessment of S. Plath.
To read her is to suffer. ;)

Great to see you out and about as well! I hope you and the family are doing fine. (We are currently in ACT Prep panic mode.)

It's so nice to read that I'm not the only one who dislikes S Plath. Usually, it's a real "Emperor's New Clothes" vibe I get, especially when forced to discuss her in college English classes. Ugh.

I definitely agree with this.

Reading Sylvia Plath reminds me of emo MySpace kids. Eugh.

Pithy and to the point, Spak-chan! You manage to get across in three words what takes me thirty. Hope your health is better, too!

This is why you are the writer and not me. Any book I wrote would be maybe a hundred words long, tops.

I'm glad to see that you're both (a) still alive, and (b) the same ole Roku. XD By the way, I had a dream the other night that you, Emily, Kris, and I were having an SSO and all four of us had finished our respective projects - which reminds me: I'd love to see what's going on in Mute, so if you reach a stage where you'd like some input, definitely let me know, as I'd love to read it.

In other news, I must agree with the above comment re: the striking similarities between dear Sylvia and an emo MySpacer. Her emo was truly ahead of its time.

Yep, I think I'll probably be the same ole Roku for a long time yet. :P

What a prophetic dream! Some day we shall all reunite on Orcas island, and SSO till the cows come home. In the meantime, Emily has the inside scoop on how Mute is doing, since she's stuck with second edit duties (you are also welcome to join in, but I fear you might be bored, re-reading the first book of Mute yet again.)

I'm not changing any plot points, but it's still a real pain to clean up the dialogue. I'm aggravated at Rowena for yammering on and on--SHUT UP AND GET TO THE POINT, GIRL! Or maybe it isn't even the dialogue so much as the redundant mental thoughts. I am cutting and cleaning here, trying to get rid of "Tell-and-Show-and-Tell-Again!" in favor of just Show.

I now have the urge to do an LJ daily quote... though I'm lazy, so I probably won't. If I did, though, I'd probably just end up quoting weird things Ree and I have said. Like, "The cat is carrying off my penis!" That was a very weird situation.

Okay, you can't just leave it there, you tease! ELUCIDATE! (taps fingers impatiently)

Heh heh heh.

I have a fake penis that I keep wrapped up in a paper towel in my desk. It's a flacid one that one can wear in one's pants to get a realistic man look. Its name is Godzilla. One of the cats got a hold of it and was carrying it around in her mouth. We noticed she had it because she started calling out with it still in her mouth so her kittens could come and play with the "toy."

What a hugely entertaining mental picture! It also proves how sadly behind the times I am when it comes to stocking my desk with modern office equipment. I have no fake Godzilla of my own at work, but I suspect it's for the best; don't want to traumatize my poor lab techs. :P

Going along with the whole "in bad taste" thing, you've probably made the Ghost of Sylvia Plath cry and write another poem about how no one understands her. You are totally propagating the very emo that you hate. :O

Well, I might hate listening to the emo, but that doesn't mean I'm not amused by the thought of Afterlife Whinging.
