SPN Meta: Feeeelings.

As of 6.06, we finally know what's up with Sam, why he kept away from Dean for a whole year, risked Dean's life and humanity without his permission, and used a baby as bait.

And I was all, Are you kidding me? That's it?

I don't think Dean was too impressed with Sam's explanation, either. I mean, come on. Feelings?

As the week wore on, and exams ( Read more... )

Knockout mice are designed to be missing a chosen gene. The biology of the mouse that lacks the gene sheds light on the function of the gene in a normal mouse, and the behavior of new Sam sheds light on the function of emotions in old Sam.

Well. That just about made my day. It's extra sweet, because I totally get your analogy; I'm reading this right after studying for my Experimental Pharmacology practical routine tomorrow.

I'm really liking your meta. I appreciate that you pointed out that Dean-without-a-soul would be different from Sam-without-a-soul, and the differences in their core philosophies.

Now I'm just waiting for show to tell me how it defines a "soul" because that's one thing I haven't been able to get, so far.

"It poses an interesting philosophical question."

One thing we do know: if Sam doesn't sleep, he doesn't dream. From Dream A Little Dream Of Me, we know that dreams are where one's deepest fears, scars, and aspirations find expression. I'd say we can assume these are also part of the SPN soul, along with emotion.

Sam's will and intellect seem to be intact, as are his curiosity, sense of humor, and drive for accomplishment. However, these qualities seem to have been a necessary part of Dean's experience in Hell. It's possible that Sam's soul was actually cut in half and all the feely bits are stuck in the Ether, or that will and intellect can originate independently in the body or in the soul.

Glad you liked the meta.

That's just it, though. So, the soul is independent of the mind? Also, Sam is quick to call on other people's bluffs this season - the waitress' sister in 6.06, the Alpha vamp's claimed ignorance of where Purgatory is... he seemed pretty certain that Crowley was bluffing about his soul. And yet he never picked up on Samuel's or Christian's deception. Is this a different kind of instinct? The others he were able to pick up through body language but his family he trusted so he didn't bother? Where did this trust originate from? And how did he know that Samuel is his grandfather anyway? IIRC, only Dean's ever met him before ( ... )

Sam's Brain: Heh. Meat-suit. That's a funny word.
Sam's Heart: GAAAAAAH! I hate you! I want you to die a horrific painful bloody death! Where's a power drill so I can stick it in my ear?
Sam's Brain: Why so serious?

HOMG YEZZZZ!!!

Dean's Brain: What do you need so you'll get on board with me here?
Dean's Heart: Whiskey?

Absolutely BWAHAHAHAHAHA.

And the knockout mice allusion?

Big, sparkly ♥♥♥ all around.
